Istanbul Airport: Europe’s Busiest Airport for the Third Year in a Row

Istanbul Airport has officially retained its title as Europe’s busiest airport for the third consecutive year. The airport handled an average of 1,401 daily flights in 2024, marking a 2% increase from the previous year. This performance outpaced major European airports like Amsterdam Schiphol, which recorded 1,336 daily flights, and London Heathrow with 1,302.

According to Abdulkadir Uraloğl, Turkey's transport and infrastructure minister, the airport has served over 338 million passengers since its opening, with more than 255 million traveling internationally. Uraloğl also expects Istanbul Airport to continue leading the region in the coming years.

The report by the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation (Eurocontrol) ranked Istanbul as the top air hub, with Turkey itself ranking sixth in Europe for daily flight traffic. In total, Turkish airports served over 230 million passengers in 2024, a 7.5% year-on-year increase.
